While bats and flying-foxes are protected species and pose minimal risk to humans, please remind your children to stay clear of them.
If you see a bat on the ground, they may be sick or injured. Do not touch the animal. Instead, call the RSPCA on 1300 264 625 or your local wildlife care organisation for assistance.
If a child is bitten or scratched by a bat, they should tell their parent, teacher or a responsible adult immediately. The wound should be washed thoroughly with soap and water, antiseptic applied, and medical attention sought urgently.
For further information, visit the Education website.
